Broken FM's

RE-POST.

We had a great comment on here today, and I was just frankly curious to get some more opinions.

Had our PPT at the school system, and they decided against using our Phonak iSense model, because they fear him loosing it on the playground, or knocking it out. Our daycare teacher hasn't had the problem with it falling out, despite running around HARD in her play area, and outside play seems to be going ok with it too. I'm pleased with it....but again, I don't have a lot of experience with this. It was dead at least twice without anyone knowing (batteries wore out...MAN do those suckers go fast!!!)

The school wants to do a low grade hearing aid on the good ear, attach a FM box to the bottom of it, and then do a mold with a notch, so that the environmental noise can go into the ear as well. I'm curious to see how well it will work. But the hard part is, he isn't able to tell me if it's working or not. That's one of our IEP goals. Realistic for an almost 3 year old?? I'm not sure.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

Original Post:

We got a Phonak iSense FM system about 2 months ago, and it has been awesome. It's a tiny receiver that doesn't need to be attached to an aid like many traditional FM systems. In older kids and adults, it can just rest on top of the ear, and the small receiver sits right inside the canal. Since my son is so young, and can't keep something so fragile in place, his is held in place by a clear in the ear mold that has a hole for us to slide the receiver into, but it's got an adaptation.

With his unilateral loss, blocking all hearing isn't a good option, so they actually made a small notch in the mold for noise to get through. Since it's just an FM, there doesn't need to be a complete seal of the ear canal. This way, I can talk into the transmitter (we have the inspiro transmitter) and he can hear me OVER the other noise, but can still hear the background noise as needed. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it clearly enough, but my understanding is, this is a new thing and our audiologist at ASD has only given it out to 2 other kids.

I highly recommended it, it was exactly the system I thought we needed, and it was working perfectly for our family....until this week. It died. Completely. For no reason that I can fathom.

I've charged the batteries in the transmitter, changed the batteries 3 times in the receiver just in case, reprogrammed the receiver to the transmitter, checked different channels to see if that worked, and that was all I could think of to try.

Our audiologists are all on vacation for 2 weeks, so we can't do a thing until they get back. One of them was contacted by the secretary, and she called me from the beach to try to talk me through things to try (soooo nice!!!)), but her suggestions were things I had already done.

Does anyone have any experience with their FM systems just randomly dying? Any more suggestions for something I could try while I wait out the vacation time of the audiologists, and the inevitable time for sending back to Phonak?

stealth mode....

going into some stealth mode for quite some time now...

I've started a new job (not necessarily of my own accord. I was kind of told that I could transition from my current job, or I could have no job. So I chose transition.) and the days have really changed.

But it's a new adventure, so off I go on it!

I will be back, PROMISE!!

And I'm still getting emails when someone comments, so leave a comment if you need to reach me :)

Stay safe!

I'm probably not a good person, because this made me laugh

U.S. states whose residents have more conservative religious beliefs on average tend to have higher rates of teenagers giving birth, a new study suggests.

Lowest Paying Jobs

I don't know if anyone else noticed this article:

10 Surprising Minimum Wage Jobs

Did you notice what #1 is? No surprise there. What we ask of our EMT's demands more than minimum wage salaries. And the part where they say experience makes the pay go higher? Not by much!! This is what is wrong with health care today...our workers don't make enough to care anymore! Eventually, carrying obese people down 3 flights of stairs because they can't (or won't) walk, crawling in and out of car wrecks, doing CPR, and putting up with a lot of crap from people will take it's toll.

Some examples? "I pay your salary, you should show some respect" when I'm restraining them because they keep spitting on me, and trying to hit me; the person with the barely sprained ankle complaining that it took me too long to get to her house that has 7 cars in the driveway, and 10 licensed drivers at the party. How about one of them drive you?; giving a ride to the ER to a drug seeker with absolutely nothing wrong with them when we have to drive past the street of a guy going into cardiac arrest while they tone for an additional crew, it goes on and on and on.
Why should we as a country even hesitate? Do you want a healthy, enthusiastic person showing up at your emergency, or do you want an overtired, overworked person just finishing their 18 hour shift, because they NEED to work that much to get by?

Look at the rest of this list....

Nanny, Pre-school teacher. The rules are the same. Do you want an overworked overtired person watching your kids in their formative years? No!!

I've worked 4 out of these 10 jobs. I thought I wanted to give my life to helping people, or through educating young children. When I realized I couldn't actually afford to pay rent and feed my OWN kid, I left the nanny job, and the life guarding job, and the preschool teacher job. We can't break out of the rut with my husband working as an EMT. I volunteer as an EMT to keep my finger on the pulse (no pun intended) of helping folks because I know at the end of the day I NEED to help people, but can't afford to do it full time. Is it any wonder people burn up and sell out to higher paying jobs when this is what they see for salaries?

Hearing Imparied Passerby Helps Injured Man

http://www.connpost.com/ci_13312601

This is just a really cool story. What a nice young lady!! People complain all the time about "college kids" in this town, because they don't like them drinking and partying, and all the carrying on.

I work in Public Safety...trust me, I KNOW what our college kids are doing. I know I would hate it if I were one of the neighbors too. But some of them stand out as stellar examples of human beings. Perhaps people shouldn't be so quick to brush off college kids after all.

Brilliant ideas

If you live in the general area of New Haven, CT you simply MUST check out...

the Cupcake Truck

www.followthatcupcake.com

It's a "little mobile bakeshop in the New Haven area" Basically, they have this truck that they sell their cupcakes out of. Not just any cupcakes, DIVINE cupcakes.

I had 1/2 of 2 different ones the other day. They were offering lemon cupcakes, and I chose a vanilla frosting on it. OH. MY.
Then, my coworker got a chocolate cupcake, and I convinced her to put the caramel frosting on it.
DELICIOUS!!!

You have to admire the entrepreneurial spirit of someone who recognized we all need a little cupcake now and then, and they bring it TO you. The party idea sounds awesome too!
